Winter Garden History has to start with the Historic Central Florida Railroad Museum. It was the first place in Winter garden that I visited. And it was by accident. I saw the red caboose behind it and noticed it was stationary. So, I walked over to the non-descript white aluminum building and looked for a door. I was glad I did.
Located in downtown Winter garden Florida the museum is in what used to be the Tavares and Gulf Rail Company’s building. I am no huge fan of riding on trains. However, I have some fond memories of them. We used to put coins on the tracks when I was a boy and watch them get smashed. Now that I think of it most of them were probably silver. Oops.
I stepped inside and was greeted by a local. He was nice and fairly educated on the local history. What I enjoyed was seeing the old train rails. I had no idea they were so small. Not at all like the train rails of today or in the old western movies. No wonder there were so many problems.
There were two main railroad companies in Winter Garden back in the 1900’s. The Atlantic Coast and the Tavares & Gulf Rail Company. The Atlantic Coast Line Building houses the Heritage Museum. Early on they hauled timber out of the area that was removed from Lake Apopka. Sadly, the magnificence of those trees will never return. Later in the 1940’s canned Orange Juice was shipped out.
The purpose of this page is not to replace the benefit of going to these museums. They need our support to keep open. You do not have to donate I would just like you to stop by and sign in. They are allocated funds proportionally to number of visitors they have. You can ask any questions you like and get answers to most of them.
One question I asked I was surprised by the answer of was this. Winter Garden has no Heraldic Symbology. Which means no approved coat of arms. Windermere has it. I was just surprised given the history of Winter Garden. Somebody needs to get that fixed so they can get their place in The history of Winter Garden. When you visit ask them about it. Maybe there should be a contest?
