Disney is better than Orlando. By that I mean to visit or be entertained. Lets face it Walt Disney World has far more visitors and more people in the world ask where is Walt Disney World than as where is Orlando Florida. That being said, Orlando is actually in a different category than Disney World.
The perfect way to start off your vacation is to land in Orlando International Airport, pick up your rental car and head to your resort destination. If you are headed to one of the 2 most famous theme parks that means you are going to Walt Disney World Resort of Universal Orlando Resort. Obviously you are seeking to immerse yourself for one of those lifetime experiences. That is probably the best way to go if you have the money and do not plan on getting outside the park much.
Full disclosure. I used to have season passes to these resorts and I have combed almost every inch of them. I have grandchildren whom we still take occasionally but as an Adult, I personally would never go back. It is to expensive, and just not refreshed enough. However, it is worth experiencing and it will take a week or more to get everything done that you can do here.
The Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World should be visited when it is a little cooler and in the late afternoon. The fireworks display needs to be seen. Some of the other attractions are Disney's Hollywood Studios, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Disney's Animal Kingdom and multiple theme parks on Walt Disney World property. My favorite two are the waterparks.
If you are an adult visiting Central Florida and not specifically a Walt Disney World Visitor I suggest skipping it. My perfect vacation (and we live here) is visiting Universal Studios Florida, Staying in the resort there and spending my final day in the Volcano Bay Waterpark, the king of water parks. Afterwards I would have dining reservations on Restaurant Row and call it a night. Universal Orlando offers much more adult entertainment and Disney movies as a whole are starting to stink.
As you can tell I will personally pass on most Disney World Parks. Most locals will as well. Try some of the locations on International Drive. The Wheel at Icon Park is unique and worth a couple of hours because there is more at that location. Seaworld Orlando is not a whole day park but a park ticket there is more than worth the cost. Orlando is a great area as a whole, we haven's scratched the surface of what is available here.
