No, Orlando is not close to Miami. Of course that depends on what you consider to be close. More modes of transportation are becoming available between Orlando and Miami. Namely the Brightline or High Speed Rail which now connects the two cities.
Orlando Airport is a little over 1 hour and 10 minutes flight time from Miami Airport. That does depend on the type of plane that you fly on. I have flown this route on small planes that did not even have a cockpit door that took a little longer. West Palm Beach's Airport is a little under one hour but the traffic between West Palm Beach and Miami is horrendous.
There are three popular routes by car from Orlando to Miami. Interstate-95 is free and about 238 miles. The quickest route is the Florida Turnpike and will cost you around $20 and it is 235 miles from downtown Orlando to downtown Miami. There is another more scenic route which passes by Lake Okeechobee which is definitely the least travelled, the furthest and slowest taking almost 4 hours but you will see a lot of alligators in the canals. Miami to Orlando is of course just the opposite.
If you are tired of the Central Florida theme parks and ready for some fun in the Atlantic Ocean then the east coast of Miami aka Miami Beach is a decent choice. I would suggest you also consider the beaches nearer Orlando FL if not then in Fort Lauderdale or even Del Ray Beaches. There are tons of options without driving all of the way to Miami Beach.
