The West Orange Trail  

 West Orange Trail FL Map-Stations Killarney-Winter Garden-The West Orange Trail is a great place for people of all fitness levels and ages. While on the trail you will see walkers, bicyclers, skaters, and allegedly horseback riders. Which I have not seen. Nor evidence there of if you get my point. When I made the video there was a lady in a wheelchair and she was passing people.

From beginning to end West Orange Trail stretches 22 miles from Killarney Station in Oakland to Welch Rd about 5 miles Northeast of Lake Apopka. However you can easily make the loop around Lake Apopka. If you choose that route make sure your bike will perform on softer dirt and on roads because you leave the West Orange Trail.  THe Picture on the right is the path.

If you do not have time or fitness for the whole 22 mile journey do not worry. Most people just take the same path I did in the video. From Oakland to Winter Garden. Of Course this is Florida and I am partial to Winter Garden. However if you I suggest you plan your trip around returning to the diners and shops on Plant Street in Winter Garden. Some cold Ice Cream or the "splash pad' will feel really good. Especially if you make the journey in the afternoon.

Safety has been thought of if you were wondering. There are police patrols and normally plenty of people on the trail. Fairly often you will see markers in the trail. They are in case someone needs to dial 911 for assistance. They have a location number for you to give the operator so you can be located. A pretty good idea that I am sure has been used. They seem to be much closer than every mile. I believe they are every 500 feet in some places. I may be incorrect. Here is a photo of one. They are very noticeable.

Some things to think about. The People over at Killarney Station are great. They are very helpful and it is privately owned. However they have signs with their telephone number hanging on the bikes they rent. If you have teenagers what are they going to think? We raised four and I don't think they would like me doing that to them.

Also both of the places you can rent bikes have children's playgrounds and and picnic areas. If you noticed in the video the Winter Garden area was really nicer.

The Bikes cost $7 an hour but you can also get a daily or weekly rate. All the current rates are in the slideshow below. Now I'm going to share some secret knowledge with you. The trail was at one time a train track. There is only one train rail left and it is not marked.  It is really cool where it is. It had a tree grow around it and it is west of the Killarney Station for it's location because it is not mapped.
